VariGAP® Design Technology
VariGAP arresters offer unbeatable equipment protection and arrester reliability. With up to 30% lower discharge voltages compared to equally rated gap-less MOV arresters, equipment life can be extended due to the reduced stresses placed upon them. VariGAP arresters can survive much higher magnitude and longer temporary overvoltages (TOV's) than equally rated gap-less MOV arresters. With its supreme TOV withstandability, VariGAP arresters are the most reliable arrester on the market today.
- Extend the life of your underground cable
- Extra protection for old or sensitive cable from voltage stresses to lengthen its service life
- Extend the life of your transformers
Distribution Class Surge Arresters
Cooper Power Systems is the leading designer and manufacturer of polymeric surge arresters. Cooper’s UltraSIL housed surge arresters utilize silicon rubber, the industry’s recognized superior polymer housing material. The patented construction of UltraSIL arresters incorporates high-quality Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs) manufactured in Cooper’s Olean, NY facility. Each arrester is subjected to a battery of electrical tests prior to shipment to ensure field performance. UltraSIL housed VariSTAR® distribution class surge arresters provide superior overvoltage protection for any electrical distribution system. They are available in Normal Duty, Heavy Duty and Heavy Duty Riser Pole classifications. Interchangeable Fuse Cutout Combinations
Combining the functions of a distribution class arrester with a fuse cutout results in a package which is compact and efficient that eliminates pole top hardware. By combining these products (arrester and fuse cutout) provides easier installation, handling and customer procurement over separately purchased and installed components.
Cooper Power Systems surge arrester - interchangeable fuse cutout combinations are available in a wide range of distribution class arrrester designs and fuse cutout ratings. Surge arresters can be ordered in silicone rubber (UltraSIL) housings, normal or heavy duty classifications and VariGAP® (gapped MOV) or VarisSTAR® (gapless MOV) designs. Type L interchangeable fuse cutout ratings are available in 15 or 27 kV ratings with a 100 A or 200 A fuseholders or a 300 A disconnect blade. These cutouts can also accommodate a Cooper Power Systems ELF full range current-limiting fuse.
A wide variety of mounting hardware is available to customize your package to that which fits your needs best. All come standard with a crossarm mounting bracket. Parallel groove or eyebolt connectors are also options for electrical connections on the cutout. Distribution Class Under-oil Mounted Arrester
Cooper Power Systems offers a unique arrester which mounts and operates under oil, our Type AZU. This heavy duty distribution class arrester provides all the same outstanding characteristics of our externally mounted units, but with other unique positive attributes.
The under-oil environment provides distinct arrester and customer benefits. These include better heat transfer to the cooling oil surrounding the arrester which allows the arrester to recover quicker after impulse operation. Further, the arrester is not subjected to the same environmental stresses seen in an outside environment. These stresses such as housing contamination and flashover due to pollution or salts, wildlife shorting the arrester, vandalism or moisture ingress can all jeopardize the life span of the arrester. Under-oil mounting takes these concerns away.
Also by having the arrester mounted under oil reduces the length of lead wires used to connect the arrester to the piece of equipment it is protecting. Shorter lead wires lowers the voltage levels seen by the protected equipment. Distribution Class Arresters for Underground Systems (Elbow and Parking Stand Arresters)
For underground distribution systems having deadfront equipment, Cooper Power Systems has a wide range of arresters for such applications. Elbow and Parking Stand arrester styles are available in a gapless or gapped MOV (VariGAP®) designs. All of these arresters come in a molded EPDM rubber housing.
- Elbow Arresters
Elbow Arresters are used on undergound systems in pad-mounted transformer and entry cabinets, vaults, switching enclosures and other installations to provide shielded deadfront arrester protection. They are designed for use with 200 A loadbreak bushings or interfaces that conform to IEEE Standard 386. These arresters limit overvoltages to acceptable levels and extend the life of cable and other connected equipment.
- Cooper Power Systems elbow arresters are available in 15, 25 or 35 kV class interface sizes per IEEE Standard 386. Arrester ratings are available from 3 to 27 kV.
- Parking Stand Arresters
Parking Stand arresters combine arrester technology with a premolded rubber insulated standoff bushing. They are designed to be used with 200 A loadbreak elbows or interfaces conforming to ANSI/IEEE Standard 386. Parking Stand arresters provide an economical means of overvoltage protection for energized but parked open point cable runs.
- Cooper Power Systems Stand arresters are available in 15 or 25 kV class interface sizes. Arrester ratings are available from 3 to 21 kV.
